Antiochus Epiphanes IV-shadow of antichrist

Prophetic scriptures repeatedly point to a single man of history as a type and shadow of the main character of the ‘endtime’, the antichrist. It seems God wants the Church to know without a doubt who the greatest liar in history will be.  You should carefully consider this article as it is a primer to help us understand all of the New Testament end time writings.

In three visions given to Daniel by God, he is supplied with a narrator, Gabriel, the Archangel Messenger.  This messenger is the one who ‘stands in the presence’* of God’s heavenly council and these visions are all about the restoration of Israel as it come into the Church.

In the 3 visions, two main actors on the world’s timeline are revealed, opposing each other:  they are Messiah (Christ) and Belial
(the lying counterfeit).

Let’s take a deeper dive and learn more about ‘the Belial Beast and the 2 abominations‘ identified in two of the three visions in the book of Daniel.  In addition, let’s consider some of the prophetic language and it’s definitions we will need to make sense of the esoteric linguistics of God.

I.  EREV BOKER (evening morning) vision of Daniel 8 given to Daniel while he resided in Susa, Iran near the Palace of Belshazzar (ruler of Babylon/Persia), which was located on the river of Ulai.

This vision shows Daniel the ‘end of the indignationjudgment, meaning God’s correction of Judah for the syncretic idolatry of the Levitical Priesthood which Daniel is shown will be conquered and contaminated by Greek culture and Roman/Greek religious practices.

In this vision, Gabriel reveals to Daniel the prophetic esoteric language of God (beasts in competition and dominion, verses 1-14) as well as the interpretation of God’s symbolic language (verses 15-27).

In essence, Gabriel is revealing some of the cipher keys which we later learn only become complete and understandable at the ‘time of the end’. The missing ingredients of these keys of course are found in the book of Revelation which the people at the end will be given along with the help of a teacher, the ‘revealer of all truth’, the Holy Spirit.

Daniel 8 can be compared to the parable of the candlestick Jesus gave to his disciples in the New Testament.  The intention of this vision, like the parable, is to give the Jews the symbolic means to know the timed conclusion of God’s judgment upon their nation for a future idolatry that is to come during the time of the Greek empire.  Keep in mind that the Jews of Babylon knew full well that their deportation was a judgment upon them for the renewed sins of their most evil King, Manasseh, which God exposed to Ezekiel (Ezekiel 8:3) in the ‘hole in the Temple wall’ vision.

Here are the definitions of the symbols Gabriel gave to Daniel in this educational vision along with the idea of two desecration’s of two different Temples.

Ram – a beast signifies a world empire.  The Ram with two horns is the Medo-Persia empire (Daniel 8:20) soon to arise and defeat Babylon.  A horn represents a POWER/SPIRIT upon a leader of a Kingdom.

Two Horns on One Head – merger of two POWERS that combine and act as one.  This symbol will occur again in Revelation where four horns act as one on one of seven heads of the ‘terrible multi-headed beast empire’, under the leadership of the LITTLE HORN, the foreseen antichrist.

Rough Goat with One Horn – undivided POWER or leader of the Greek empire.

King of Fierce Countenance – the last wise King of the Greek Empire who will destroy Judah and defile the Temple until the ‘priestly transgression judgment’ is completed. 

Note that this King stands up twice (arises), first subduing the holy people [Priesthood] with prosperity and peace while defiling the sanctuary, the holy of holies in Jerusalem [by the abomination of desolation].  However, when he stands up the second time, he does so against the ‘Prince of princes’, a term for Judas the Maccabean, a Captain of captains (military genius, 167-160 BC) who also was a Cohen, a member of the Aaronic Priesthood.

Most interpreters view this Fierce Countenance man as King Antiochus IV (Epiphanes), the Seleucid Greek King of Syria (215 BC – 164 BC), a precursor to the endtime ‘man of sin’. Jesus predicted the future reemergence of this well known destroyer from the Mount of Olives, after Jesus had been rejected by the corrupt Priesthood of his time, that very day in Jerusalem, just a few hours before his passion.

Jesus reference to a second‘Abomination of desolation’ refers to Daniel 12:11 endtime prophecy.  This is contrasted with the Daniel 11:31 prophecy, which specifically refers to Epiphanes setting up the ‘Jupiter statue’ in the Temple in 164BC, the first ‘Abomination of desolation’.

The Apostle Paul confirms the second emergence of an Antiochus Epiphanes-like man at the end of the Church age in  2 Thessalonians 2:8.  Paul states that the ‘wicked, lawless one’ is defeated by the ‘brightness of Messiah’s arrival’.  Paul was very familiar with the term ‘wicked one’ in the Rabbinical writings of his day which referenced the first Epiphanes as’the wicked one’.

Thus the character of the future Antichrist (second Epiphanes) prophesied to rise is identified for the endtime Church; a man who will emerge with the same antithetical demeanor and destroying spirit of the past.  Antiochus IV of the past helps us complete a profile of the ‘son of perdition’, the Antichrist of the future.

Prince of Princes – The Maccabean Priest of Aaronic lineage is Judas Maccabeus, the hammer, the military genius.  He perfects asymmetric warfare against the Syrian Greek armies and prevails.  He breaks the King of Fierce Countenance with something that is not a traditional war strategy, yet undefined by Gabriel.  Judas Maccabeus executed what has become to be known as ‘guerrilla war’, also known asymmetric war. 

2300 Days [evening-mornings] of Abomination – the duration of the prophecy detailing the time of the first pollution (erection of the statue Jupiter by Epiphanes) of the Temple sanctuary and prohibition of sacrifices  until it is cleansed (statue removed by Judas Maccabeus).  Keep in mind that the Daniel 8 prophecy describes  the 167-164BC abomination, whereas half of Daniel 11 and all of Daniel 12 describe the endtime desecration of the temple (more on this below).

The Hebrew in this passage of Daniel 8:12-14 does not use the normal term for days,’boker’, but a Temple term for the evening and morning sacrifices, ‘erev boker’ (Daniel 8:14).  Said another way, ‘evening morning days‘.  Thus, the duration of the first pollution of the Temple is 1,150 days (2300 / 2 sacrifices per day).  This is a parallel prophecy to the future 2nd desecration of the endtime Temple (Daniel 12:11-12) of 1,290 and 1,335 days [erev boker, evening morning].

Just to reemphasize the point, Daniel saw two desecrations of the Temple in 3 visions.  Since the first desecration was past in Jesus’ day, Jesus reference to Daniel’s predicted 2nd desecration is what we are currently looking for.

Please note that few dates are better established in antiquity than the dates of the interruption of the sacrifice and its restoration in Daniel 8:12-14 by Epiphanes, as detailed in the Jewish history book of the Maccabees.

The termination of the desecration is established in the same book I Mac. 4:52,53

“And they arose before the morning of the 25th day of the 9th month of the 148th year, and they offered sacrifices according to the law upon the new altar…”

Using the Greek calendar according to Herodotus in use during the time of the Maccabees, with one assumption that the years 146 and 148 (Gregorian calendar years 167 – 164 BC) were intercalary years (leap years padded with an extra 30 day month), we come up with the following calculation: 9-15-145 to 9-25-148 (Herodotus Greek Year Calendar), the dates given in Maccabees from the desecration to the cleansing, is three years and ten days. Thus, the math sentence following the Greek calendar which was in use at the time the prophecy was fulfilled would be: (3 X 360) + (2 X 30) + 10. Let’s diagram it.

3 x 360 equals ********************1080 days
2 x 30 (2 intercalary months)******60 days
From 15th to 25th equals **********10 days

Total *******************************1150 days

This is exactly the period which would accomplish a precise 2,300 sacrifices, one in the morning and one in the evening, as Daniel 8 predicts! */

II.  The YOM (day) vision of Daniel 10/11/12 is given to Daniel 3 years after the Medo-Persian empire had subdued the Babylonian empire.  Daniel is living among the exiles along the Tigris river (Hiddekel) and his former employers, the Royal family of Babylon, are now either deceased or in prison.

We are not told why Daniel is fasting (21 days), only that he had an incredible conversation with a Priest-like Angel who appears to be Gabriel of Daniel 8. We can speculate that Daniel wanted to know more about the future events in the vision of the ‘goat’ empire that defeated the ‘ram’ empire in his initial vision at the Ulai river in Susa.  Daniel is not disappointed by his heavenly messenger.

When the Angel arrives again, Daniel already knows the prophetic ‘symbol language’ of God, previously disclosed to him in Daniel 8.  It’s as if the Daniel 8 vision is the main outline and Daniel 10/11/12 are a parentheses, similar to the book of Revelation where Vials, Trumpets, and Seals are all described parenthetically.

Again, Daniel is given history in advance, seeing the struggle over the Promised land after it is conquered by Alexander the Great and his successors (200+ years into the future).

Daniel sees the aftermath of political turmoil after Alexander’s death (323 BC).  He is shown a future Greek empire divided in two; North (Seleucid) and South (Ptolemaic), one headquartered in Syria, one in Egypt, crushing Judah between its pincers.

Then Daniel is shown two great and terrifying leaders arising in two different tie periods:  Antiochus Epiphanes IV, King of Syria, and Antichrist, the ‘Little Horn’  of John’s Revelation (who rides a beast of red and purple colors).

Further, in Daniel 9:27 which continues the Daniel 8 vision, Daniel is shown the Destroying Prince.  This man is contrasted to the Promised  Messiah.  Finally, in Daniel 11, the prophet is shown the last chapter of Israel’s history prior to the rescuing arrival of the rejected Messiah.  Thus, we see two beasts contrasted:   Antiochus Epiphanes IV and Antichrist.

What can confuse people is this:

  1.  Two Beasts are contrasted (Antiochus [164BC] and antichrist)
  2.  Two Princes are contrasted (Destroying Prince [Titus 70AD] and Messiah)

Daniel 11:21-35 is a deliberate portrait showing Daniel again Antiochus IV, the one who causes the Temple to be defiled.  But verse 35 is a time-cliff, taking Daniel all the way from the vile Epiphanes (d 164 BC) to verse 36-45, the 2nd Antiochus IV, the anticipated Antichrist of the 21st century. The comparison is deliberate, a premeditated cynosure for the end time Church.

2nd Abomination of Desolation – In Daniel 12:11-12, the phrase ‘erev boker’ does not reappear when connected to the ‘daily’ sacrifice (being taken away) as it did in Daniel 8:14.  The term used is ‘yom’, translated ‘day’, a non-Temple term.  Keep in mind that in Daniel 8:14, the term ‘erev boker’ was translated ‘days’, a definite physical Temple term.

Daniel 12:11-12 KJV  And from the time that the daily [sacrifice] shall be taken away, and the abomination that maketh desolate set up, there shall be a thousand two hundred and ninety days [yom].  12  Blessed is he that waiteth, and cometh to the thousand three hundred and five and thirty days [yom].

Thus we conclude that Daniel 12:11-12 is not talking about a ‘physical Temple’ where the  abomination of desolation occurs at a second future date.  The question then becomes, what is the 2nd future Abomination of Desolation if there is no physical Temple? (see my article on 3 Prophecies)

The New Testament answers this by telling us that a persecution of the Church and a declaration of a false Messiah will occur.  In other words, Antichrist will claim to be the TRUE MESSIAH at the end of the Church age, a declaration of ‘God manifest’.  This foreseen declaration is in itself, an Abomination that causes the Holy Spirit not to rest on those that take his mark in idolatrous worship and identity.

Sidebar: The blasphemy of the Holy Ghost is the name of the Antichrist, revealed to the world, which will grant financial security and identity.  In severe economic times, the citizens of planet earth will line up like hungry crows to escape the world wide dirge and confusion that has encompassed the internet connected masses. More on this identity in future writings, which is the Abomination of Desolation exposed to the Church, the Temple of the Holy Ghost.


Also, because the word ‘yom’ is used and not the Temple term ‘erev boker’ in Daniel 12:11-12, the 1,290 day duration of the ‘abomination’ are not divisible by 2 to accommodate evening and morning daily sacrifices.  Therefore, we know that this is a 3 1/2 year period (plus 30 days) of desolation, the time of Jacob’s trouble and desecration of the Church, which will be dominated by Antichrist.   This fits the tribulation period exactly as described in Daniel 9:27 [See my article on Daniel 9:27, The Strong Delusion].

Revelation 13:7-9 KJV  And it was given unto him to make war with the saints, and to overcome them: and power was given him over all kindreds, and tongues, and nations.  8  And all that dwell upon the earth shall worship him, whose names are not written in the book of life of the Lamb slain from the foundation of the world.  9  If any man have an ear, let him hear.
